We have two little secrets where one is where the letter’s GB in the mountain come from and the other is the Danie Miller Hike. Well, the letter’s GB in the mountain do not stand for Gordon’s Bay but for General Botha – the name of the Naval Officers’ Academy in Gordon’s Bay. Now what has that to do with Danie Miller?
Walking the the Danie Miller Hiking Trail will surprise you with the most spectacular views of Gordon’s Bay, False Bay, Helderberg Area and our harbor. It has a wide variety of indigenous plants, small streams and is a contour walk for young and old and follows the contour above the top houses along the length of Gordon’s Bay just below the anchor. The trial is about 2.9km long and takes about 2 hours to walk. Start is at Aurora Drive and ends near the end of Suikerbossie drive.
Now who is Danie Miller? In the late 1980’s Danie Miller was Mayor of Gordon’s Bay and built the trail with the help of his two daughters, Chanel and Lisa. He called it the “Mayor’s walk”.
In later years the Gordon’s Bay municipality decided to rename it to ”Danie Miller Trail”. The trail has recently been incorporated in the Kogelberg Biosphere and will be controlled and maintained by the Biodiversity Management of the City of Cape Town. A small group of people usually walk the trail on the first Sunday of each month, weather permittingThere are 131 species of plants in the area. Probably about 20-30% of species to be found along the trail. The others will only be visible in other seasons and at different veld ages. Conspicuously missing are Orchids, Ericas and Sedges. The full Plant ID List is here. The Danie Miller hiking trail has no entry fee, and can be accessed at any time.
We have had a serious veld fire in 2018 which devastated a part of the area and meanwhile we are able to see nature recovering.
You can park your car safely in Suikerbossie Road or at Aurora Road. The entrance is marked by an open piece of land on the mountain’s side of the road where there is a sign showing you the hiking trail and what are the Do’s and Don’ts when walking there.
You can download a copy of the Danie Miller Hike Brochure here. Like the Danie Miller Trail on Facebook.
If you don’t want to walk, enjoy the Steenbras Lookout Point. The way up by car is just after the Whale Lookout Point from Gordon’s Bay starts here.
